Saturday, November 9, was a chilly day for southeast Texas, but that didn’t stop 40 ACE members from showing up at the entrance to Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston at 7:30 a.m. for the annual Summer Under Cover Con event. This year’s theme was space, which was chosen because of the debut of the park’s newest attractions earlier in the year, the very fast and fun mat racing slides, Infinity Racers.
After being greeted at the front entrance by ACE volunteers and Schlitterbahn staff, the group was off to Pointe Pizza for breakfast, which was also reserved just for ACE for the entire day. While filling up on pancakes, eggs, bacon and more bacon, the Schlitterbahn crew of Angela Flournoy, Aaron Martinez and Ron Sutula welcomed ACE to the park. Sutula, the park’s general manager, spoke to the group about some of the changes that will be taking place under its new owner, Cedar Fair, and how excited they are for the future of the park.

After breakfast it was time for an hour of ERT on the slide towers. Once the park opened, attendees were given a behind-the-scenes tour, and then the group was free to enjoy the remainder of the attractions on their own. Lunch was also included with a wristband provided at check-in.

As evening approached, everyone slowly made their way back to Pointe Pizza to dry off, warm up and wait for dinner. As always, the park provided a wonderful meal to end the event. Attendees enjoyed bacon-wrapped pork loin, bacon-wrapped turkey legs and numerous sides, plus an Oreo parfait for dessert. Adult beverages were also provided for those who wanted them. During dinner the park staff spoke to the group once again and reassured everyone that Schlittercon will take place in New Braunfels on Memorial Day weekend and Beach Con will happen at the Galveston park on Labor Day weekend. The regional rep team wrapped things up by discussing the upcoming events and some of the planning for 2020 events.

At the end of the day, ACEers went home having received admission, ERT, three meals, an event T-shirt and an awesome 40th anniversary insulated cup — all for a registration fee of only $20. A big thanks to the staff at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston, especially Flournoy, Martinez and Sutula for hosting the event even with all the changes going on the last few months and for continuing to provide events at such an amazing value to ACE.
