A first-of-its-kind flying roller coaster from Vekoma has opened at Phantasialand in Bruhl, Germany. Somehow this amazing theme park resort has woven yet another new area into its intricate landscape, named “Rookburgh” with a theme of early aviation. F.L.Y. is its anchor attraction, and it is the world’s longest and first launched flying coaster. Its tangle of track runs in all directions and seems impossible to follow, and its statistics are not reported; still, attendees of the soft opening on September 17, 2020, report two linear synchronous motor launches and a very disorienting but smoothly thrilling experience full of sudden directional changes and tunneled sequences.

Unlike any flying coaster built to date, F.L.Y.’s three trains of 10 cars holding riders two-across are loaded with seats upright and in-line with backs against the track, which is turned on its side 90 degrees. As trains roll out of the station with riders traveling sideways, the track enters a dark ride section during which the track twists 90 degrees to turn seats in flying position, which are then rotated 90 degrees themselves to face forward.

The inspired look of Rookburgh extends to its new “in-flight” hotel, named in honor of U.S. aviator Charles Lindbergh.
