American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) recognizes Six Flags Over Georgia’s Mind Bender as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark, a designation reserved for rides of historic significance.
Built by Germany’s legendary Anton Schwarzkopf (1926-2001) and custom-designed by Werner Stengel (1936- ), the attraction opened on March 31, 1978, boasting two 53-foot tall vertical loops separated by a series of drops and turns, and a spectacular diagonal diving helix. Occupying three acres on the side of a steeply sloped wooded site, the 28-passenger coaster trains negotiate 3,264 feet of track at a top speed of 54 mph. With an initial drop of 80 feet, the trains maintain a remarkable smoothness, comfort and pacing while offering an overall elevation difference of 153 feet between the highest and lowest points, a considerable engineering feat for its time.
The innovative four-sided tube truss track system, integrating the ride’s steel rails, allowed for fewer structural supports, giving the ride a modern space-age appearance. With its unique structure, pleasing layout and ground-hugging features, Mind Bender’s design contributed significantly to the evolution of steel coasters worldwide.
Today Mind Bender remains an integral part of Six Flags Over Georgia’s impressive collection of thrill rides.
