Big roller coaster openings often overshadow some smaller installations. However, the importance of family-style projects cannot be underestimated. Parents with kids are always looking for options when visiting a park. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (Vallejo, California) debuted a new coaster this summer with families in mind.

Sidewinder Safari was originally slated to open in 2020. The pandemic hit that spring, and plans went askew across the industry. California was under some of the strictest regulations. Although on hold for a time, the new spinning coaster welcomed families and fans with new fun at the beginning of the summer.

Built by Zamperla, the new ride brings the coaster count to the double digits with 10 now on offer. The placement of the ride was on a piece of land that formerly held an attraction where visitors could ride elephants. Cultural attitudes have shifted on such attractions, and the new roller coaster offers family entertainment while still providing an animal experience. Placed within the queue, a new exhibit allows guests to observe several species of snakes and reptiles. Themed as a lost temple, the queue also allows guests to test their knowledge of snake myths. The theming extends throughout the area.

An exhibit on reptiles lets visitors observe animals and check their knowledge of them.

Sidewinder Safari is a classic Twister coaster from Zamperla’s portfolio. It joins four other brethren within the United States, although more than 25 from the company are in operation globally.

“The Six Flags installation features a unique harness that allows a wide range of guests to ride,” said Adam Sandy, roller coaster sales and marketing, Zamperla. “We are utilizing an ADA system developed for thrill rides like the Discovery on some of our coasters. We strive to make our attractions accessible to as many riders as possible.”

The ride entrance has a wonderful sign created for the portal. The front of each coaster car is also themed with an onlooking viper to add to the fun.
