On the morning of June 25, a catastrophic partial derailment on Jetline at Gröna Lund (Stockholm, Stockholm, Sweden) resulted in one death and nine injuries as the front of the train came to an abrupt stop approximately 20 to 25 feet above ground.

Eyewitnesses said at least two people fell out of the train and one was seen clinging to the track. All were taken to a nearby hospital where some victims were treated for severe injuries and three children were subsequently released with minor ones.

Jetline opened in 1988 as a collaboration between legendary coaster designer Anton Schwarzkopf and Bayerische Hütten Stahl (BHS). Reaching a height of 105 feet within the tight confines of the park, the roller coaster was modified by Maurer Rides in 1997 to include a longer, steeper first drop with tunnel. In 2003, the Vilda Musen wild mouse-style coaster was installed within Jetline’s structure.

Police have begun two investigations — one to determine how the train derailed and a second to possibly result in criminal charges of involuntary manslaughter, causing bodily harm and danger to others. Gröna Lund will remain closed indefinitely pending its outcome. Meanwhile the park has set up a crisis line to support those affected by the accident.
