As a young boy I remember that summer ended on Labor Day weekend. The only rides to be enjoyed were at the county fair, where we always had to get between the award-winning harvest and animals to reach a handful of portable rides. And with me not really being interested in haunted houses, which weren’t as big as they are now, it was a long drought until Memorial Day.
Now, the coaster riding season continues into the wonderfully clear days of autumn. Cool, crisp weather full of pumpkin spice, hoodies and, best of all, meet-ups with friends in parks far and wide. I don’t know whether the added attraction of haunted mazes or just being able to enjoy rides later in the season started parks on this path, but I’m glad to have the opportunities.
Long ago, I heard from a friend about a fantastic event in the middle-of-nowhere Pennsylvania at a park called Knoebels. On a chance, my son and I packed up our tent and drove into the mountains via a TripTik (I learned my lesson — only use the Knoebels’ printed directions!) and had the best time ever at my first Phoenix Phall Phunfest. I think we dressed up as “Men in Black” that year. Over time we’ve made new friends at this event and always love catching up with old ones.
While I love the night rides on Phoenix, it’s really the people who always make the event Phun! This year I was honored to be asked to judge the costume contest parade. The creativity and artistry for more than a hundred costumes was outstanding. But the Friday enthusiast event is what made the weekend. It was like rolling back the calendar to enjoy a great day in the park with plenty of rides with friends from all over the country.
A big thanks to Knoebels for hosting this event and bringing so many smiles to so many faces! But this year I did realize something was missing from past PPP’s — enthusiasts in costumes on the ride platforms. Following what I know will be an outstanding Coaster Con in Pennsylvania, I urge everyone at PPP Phriday next year to wear your costume to the enthusiast event. It will make it even more Phun for all (and especially you)!
Wait! Now the season is extended to New Year’s thanks to park holiday events! So there are many more opportunities to meet new friends and reconnect with old acquaintances. Whenever you can, take the chance and get out and have fun, because people and fun are what this hobby is all about.
